THERE was pandemonium
yesterday at the popular Wuse
Market, Abuja as one of the
parking stores close to Zenith
Bank PLc, was razed by fire.
The fire, according to
eyewitnesses, began in the
evening hours when traders were
about closing for the day.
An eye witness, who refused
to give her name, who also owns
a shop beside the parking store,
told Nigerian Pilot that the fire
began about 5: 45 pm, revealing
that the cause of the fire was from
faulty electrical appliances.
“As I was parking my goods to
close for the day, all of a sudden
electric wire connected to this
store sparked and ignited fire in
the building. Since then all effort
to put off the fire proved abortive
as the fire kept escalating. I will
not leave here until I see the end
of this because I don’t want this
fire to extend to my own shop,”
she said.
Other eyewitnesses who
claimed that goods worth
millions of naira were destroyed,
told Nigerian Pilot that the
parking store was filled with
plastic chairs, tables, buckets and
electronics.
Meanwhile, fire fighters from
the FCT command were on
ground to prevent the fire from
engulfing the other buildings
close to it especially, Zenith Bank.
The actual damage could not
be ascertained as at the time of
filing this report, as the fire was
yet to be put off.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that as
at 8:00 pm fire fighter had used
four tanks of water, and might
need four more to put off the fire.
When interviewed one of
the fire fighters, who pleaded
anonymity said that the rescue
effort took time because they
could not gain entrance to the
building.
“Well we got the call but when
we reached here we could not gain
entrance because today is Sunday,
Wuse gate is locked and the
parking store is locked,” he said
