hotel on fireFire yesterday gutted a notable hotel, the Pretoria Hotel and Suites, Owerri, situated near Winner’s Chapel off Port Harcourt out road, New Owerri.
The two storey building, housing the torched hotel, was enveloped by balls of fire in the early hours of yesterday with no apartment spared by the raging inferno that lasted for hours.
As the three floors were wrapped in flames which consumed properties worth over N350million, the guests and workers scampering for safety were seen running helter skelter in the surrounding.
Despite how ferocious the conflagration was, all the lodgers and staff managed to escape unhurt and no life was lost as a result of the fire outbreak.
When our correspondent visited the scene, the building was still in flames and smouldering in the late afternoon even as the men of the Imo State Fire Service made frantic efforts to put out the fire.
With the fire hitting almost all the rooms and sections of the triplex, some partitions of the walls were cracked and had started collapsing.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that firemen arrived quite late, a situation, they said, made the inferno to gut the entire building leaving nothing spared.
The incident attracted hundreds of sympathisers who trooped out to see the inferno just as they assisted in quenching the fire as well as the affected lodgers and staff who lost all their personal effects to the fire.
Efforts to speak with management of the hotel however, proved abortive as those contacted preferred anonymity even as a source blamed the fire incident on electrical fault.
