Federal Government has been advised to provide more funds to local government councils to enable them embark on mechanized farming for the benefit of the people at the grassroots.
The Special Adviser to the Kwara State Governor on Local Government Affairs, Alhaji AbdulKareem Ayinde, gave this advice while speaking with journalists yesterday in Ilorin.
He noted that several departments of agriculture at the grassroots were currently in shambles following lack of fund to carry out agricultural programmes, noting that since “the local government councils are the custodian of land, they would utilize the fund to embark on several agricultural ventures.”
The governor’s aide however expressed optimism that the measure would no doubt increase the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, of the councils and bring employment opportunities to several unemployed youths.
He also maintained that the agricultural sector has various areas that could generate revenue for the country if adequately funded.
He raised alarm over the nonchalant attitudes of the three tiers of government towards the agricultural sector, which brought the country to limelight after Independence.
