Mrs Atinuke Oyindamola, Managing Director, Lady Atinuke Home for the Mentally-Challenged, on Thursday pleaded with parents who have such children not to abandon them.
Oyindamola, who runs a foundation, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry, Lagos State.
She called for an end to victimisation of such mentally challenged people in the society.
“Parents of these children with mental challenges need to understand that these kids are special and they just require special treatment, because most of them are very talented.
“Parents should stop abandoning them just because of their challenges.
“Cases of parents abandoning their mentally challenged children are becoming rampant and this shouldn’t be the case.
“All they need is proper care and they would become great people in life, so people who give birth to such should take it as a challenge to make them great,” she said.
Oyindamola said that running a Home for the mentally challenged could be tasking, but the children needed to be given the needed support.
She said that operators of such Homes could do with all the support they could get.
“Basically, we run the place from the little funds we are able to raise by ourselves and by some well wishers, but that isn’t still enough.
“The children here need special care. The medicines and feedings for the kids are quite expensive and also we have to create an enabling environment for them so as to cater for their needs because they demand special attention,” she said.
Oyindamola urged the Lagos State Government and non-governmental organisations to assist the home to be able to do more for the children.
