David Haye claims Lennox Lewis has taught him that bigger is not better.
Haye has dismissed Lewis’ concerns that he has lost some of his trademark speed because he has bulked up ahead of his second comeback fight against Arnold Gjergjaj at The O2 on Saturday, which is live on Dave.
The two-weight world champ says he has lost none of his speed, even though he is a stone heavier.
“I completely understand that and that’s one of the things I’ve focused on is not necessarily bulking up,” said Haye.
“Being bigger is not necessarily being better. Lennox Lewis as he got older, he started to thicken up and he started slowing down and starting taking shots he wouldn’t have normally taken.
“Putting on an extra stone does not make me punch any harder. It will just make my punches a little slower and what’s the point of having a big punch, if you can’t land it?”
Haye, 35, revealed he has been sparring with gym-mate George Groves to work on his speed.
“I’ve been sparring with George the day before yesterday for speed, so I’m used to a super-middleweight’s speed, so when I get in the ring it will seem like it is in slow motion,” said the former WBA heavyweight champ.
“George is a fast super-middleweight and it was a real, good technical spar we did, slipping shots. It was a really good few rounds we did. It really did give me that stamp of approval and come fight night, my timing will be as good as anything.”
Gjergjaj is 29-0 with 21 KOs and Haye has promised former WBO king Shannon Briggs a shot next in September.
Briggs, who does not yet have an opponent for Saturday’s show, called Haye out again at today’s presser at the Muhammad Ali exhibition at The O2, saying: “Let’s go champ!”
Haye said: “People in the street are shouting out at me ‘let’s go champ’, so if they want it, I will give it to them.”
American Briggs, who turned up looking like a bandit, wearing a poncho and handkerchief over his face, said: “If he takes care of this geezer, he has me next.”
Gjergjaj was born in Kosovo and is only fighting outside of his adopted Swiss homeland for the second time.
