In a manner similar to the dastardly attack on Ukpabi-Nimbo Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area by Fulani herdsmen that left many people dead and scores injured, another attach occurred yesterday at Ndiagu, Attakwu-Akegbe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
This time, the rampaging herdsmen descended on the community in the afternoon, killed a seminarian immediately and gave others serious machete cuts.
A pregnant woman was said to have been attacked and her stomach carved with a knife.
A source close to the community told Nigerian Pilot that the herdsmen attacked the community because some youths chased away their cows from grazing on their farms.
Ignited by the ugly incident, the source said that youths in the community marched angrily to the palace of their traditional ruler, whom they accused of accepting the Fulanis to their community.
According to the source, if the youth had met the royal father at home, they would have killed him.
“The youth would have killed the Igwe, whom they accused of accepting bribe from the Fulanis to come and sojourn in their community, if they had met him at home,” he said.
According to the spokesman of the Enugu State Command of the Nigerian Police, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, a detachment of Anti Riot Policemen, Counter Terrorism Unit, as well as operatives of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal and Investigation Department was quickly deployed to the area to ward off any breakdown of law and order.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu has visited the community and urged them to be calm, just as he sympathised with family of the victims as well as the entire community over the attack.
Ojukwu also urged them not to panic as the state command, in partnership with relevant stakeholders and the state government, had stepped into the incident.
The CP also visited the injured persons at both Mother of Christ Hospital and Parklane Hospitals, Enugu.
According to Amaraizu, a full-scale investigation has commenced to get into the root of the incident for proper action to be taken.
