President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the Visitor to the Federal University of Technology, FUT, Minna , has said good, quality, and high standard education will assure of a prosperous Nigeria.
The President, represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission NUC, Professor Julius Okojie, said this at the 2013/2014 graduation ceremony of FUT, Mina on Saturday.
Dr. Jonathan believes all over the world, Universities are the birthplace of societal change and national development, steering the nation to prosperity and keeping society’s conscience alive.
To this end, according to him “we need to imbibe a culture of peace, harmony, constructive criticism and conflict resolution in our universities to avoid incessant disruptions of academic calendar, thereby returning to October to June system and leaving room for the normal three months vacation between sessions , will make for a more productive system.”
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Musbau Akanji said 3,490 were graduated among whom were thirty four, 34, students as first class for the academic session.
The Vice Chancellor said that in the last set, 82 first class was recorded.
According to him “A total of 3,490 graduands will be conferred with degrees and diplomas. This is made up of 2,903 First degrees, 105 Postgraduate diplomas, 453 Masters’ and 29 Doctoral degrees.
“Of the first degree category which is classified, 34 are First class, 811 in Second class upper divisions, 1,363 in Second class lower division, 648 in Third Class categories while 47 are with Pass degrees”.
Akanji further stated that out of the 138 Universities in the country, University of Lagos is 1st position while the FUT, Minna has moved to 6th position in Nigeria and 57th in Africa as against its previous positions of 9th in Nigeria and 68th in Africa.
Speaking on malpractices, the VC said any student found wanting risks outright expulsion from the institution, adding that total dismissal awaits any lecturer who indulges in same.
“A slight infringement is now total expulsion, we have an examination malpractice committee that is saddled with the responsibility of scrutinising any case of malpractice,” he added.
