Top officials of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN have been singled out for some lashing over the failure of the country’ youth team to participate in the recently concluded IAAF World Youth Championship that ended July 19 in Cali, Colombia.
The G.O.C, 82 Division, Nigeria Army, General Shehu Yusuf, made this condemnation while addressing executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Enugu state chapter who paid him a courtesy visit at his office recently.
The former Army Director of Sports and Physical Training, Zaria wondered why such countries as Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Zimbabwe, South Africa and their likes could send their contingents to the five days competition and Nigeria failed to secure visas for its athletes.
“It is highly unthinkable that a body like AFN saddled with the task of nurturing our budding athlete’s talents could fail so abysmally in taking our young athletes to a major championship like the IAAF World Youth Championship. I am very sure that some of these top officials found their way to Colombia while those that they are supposed to nurture did not make the trip. It is a shame,” he thundered.
He called for a change of attitude from sports managers who are always in the habit of abandoning their major task of discovering and developing identified sporting talents to represent the country in major international sporting championships stressing, “Surely, this is a great dis-service to these young athletes who have trained so hard to get to the shape they required to make a name for themselves and their fatherland.”
