Louis van Gaal will make another attempt to prise Gareth Bale away from Real Madrid, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.
Manchester United’s Dutch boss has admitted a “surprise” signing is on the cards before the summer transfer window closes.
And that means the world’s most expensive footballer could be on his way to Old Trafford.
Wales winger Bale, who cost the Spanish giants £85million from Tottenham two years ago, had a tough time in La Liga last season, was repeatedly barracked by Madrid fans on and off the pitch and has struggled with the learning the language.
And with Van Gaal now hinting United could do something special in the remaining 44 days of the transfer window, Old Trafford sources have confirmed Bale – now valued at £95m by the Spaniards – is still on their radar.
Their chief transfer negotiator Ed Woodward flew home from Seattle on Saturday, after watching Van Gaal’s stars kick off their USA tour with a 1-0 win over Mexican side Club America through a debut goal from Morgan Schneiderlin.
Top of Woodward’s to-do list are negotiations for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, who has told the Spanish side he wants to join United.
The 27-year-old Argentinian is set link up with international-level defensive colleague Marcos Rojo, with Woodward confident he can seal a deal for the experienced centre-back.
Although Sergio Ramos was their main defensive target, United feel it will now be hard to prise the Spanish star out of Real Madrid and are going after Otamendi.
His arrival would spell the end for Jonny Evans, who is a £7million target for West Brom, Sunderland and Everton.
Also expected to leave this week is Brazilian ful-back Rafael with Turkish side Galatasaray leading the chase for the 25-year-old, who has been ousted by the arrival of £12.5m Italian Matteo Darmian.
