Popcorn business is no doubt a lucrative business that have enriched many youths’ pocket, especially those fresh student waiting to gain admission into higher institution and some fresh graduate waiting for well paid jobs.
Unfortunately, people neglect this particular business owing to low income generated from it but the secret is that it has high volume of sales as children and ladies can hardly do without it.
Popcorn is considered as snacks eaten in a cinema hall, club and other social gathering by young people just to keep the mouth busy when they are bored.
Ms. Ginika Uzodinma is a popcorn seller who attached her popcorn machine in front of a newly opened hotel, Chesbon Hotels in Kubwa. She said in starting this kind of business, one has to look for a strategic place where people troop in and out.
“I just finished my secondary education, waiting to complete my 0 level papers to further my education but I can’t just stay at home. I need to save towards getting admission. The only easy business I could think of was to start popcorn business because it does not require much money or any qualification. Besides, I make my daily money from it because children like popcorn a lot.”
However, many people have wandered long in search of what business they can do and most of them are concerned about the business that they can start up with small capital.
Popcorn is a popular snack people eat as appetizers and sometimes just for the fun of it. It is widely patronised at theatres just to keep fingers busy and mouth moving.
Popcorn is kind of a big deal. Not just because it’s delicious, but it’s recently been found to actually be good for everybody irrespective of age and sex. Really, new findings suggest that a serving of popcorn contains more antioxidants than a day’s worth of fruits and vegetables.
Itodo Paul, discussing his journey into popcorn world, explained in bit by bit on how to make perfect popcorn. He also narrated not only the economic benefits of it but also discussed the health benefits derived from eating popcorn.
Looking into Itodo’s journey into popcorn business, he told Nigerian Pilot the journey started from general maintenance of industrial machines which transpired into popcorn specialist. “After my university education in 2006, I was not doing anything serious but was living at the mercy of my relative for survival.
“I have always thought with my University certificate, the labour market would be rosy but little did I know it was far-fetching. Having roamed for three years in the street of Lagos and Abuja searching for white collar job, I ran into a friend who introduced me to popcorn business.
“After learning how to make popcorn for a month, I used the little money I had on me to buy popcorn machine so I could start up my own. In May 2011, instead of staying idle I opened up my own which is still my means of livelihood.
“Popcorn business has a lot of benefits but its numerous benefits are seen mostly on economic and health benefit:
“It is worthy of note that this is an avenue for job creation. Many today use this business to sustain their living. A lot of graduates like me today have eased themselves that burden of looking for white collar jobs that never shown up. One good thing about it is that it provides equal opportunity for both men and women who wish to do it. This is to say that, it has no gender discrimination as it is liberal for all no matter your sex, colour, and age.
“It also cannot be argued that this business is an income generating one which cannot be neglected. For instance, I buy one bag of kernel (popcorn maize) for eight thousand naira (N8000), and make profit of twenty to twenty five thousand naira (N20000 to N25000). For a month I normally sell four to five bags of kernel that when calculated gives close to hundred thousand naira (N100000) after deducting expenses and this gives me over and above what I earned when working with my formal places of work.
“Again, popcorn can serve as food. So many people use it as lunch. This group of people is believed to be popcorn fans or who are obsessed with it and after taking it they wouldn’t want to eat any other meal.
“It requires small capital to start up. Starting up popcorn business one needs the following: business ideal space, popcorn machine, kernel (corn), butter, groundnut oil, sugar, leather bag for packaging, salt, flavor.
“Popcorn saves time. The total time needed to make popcorn could be only 5 to 10mins and the process is easy. To prepare, take 3 tablespoons oil, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ cup popping corn, 3 tablespoons butter melted in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the oil, salt or sugar and popping corn. Turn the heat to medium, cover the pot with a lid left slightly ajar, and shake once or twice. The corn kernels will begin to pop within a minute or two. Once the popping slows to an almost stop, remove the pot from the heat. Transfer the popcorn to a large serving bowl and drizzle with melted butter, tossing well to combine. Add more butter or salt, if preferred.
“In health aspect, popcorn contains fiber and is the only snack that’s 100% whole grain. And whole grains are really good for you because they contain those antioxidants.
In popcorn’s case, the antioxidants are found in the hull (the seedy part that gets stuck in your teeth) and are called polyphenols. Like all antioxidants, polyphenols help protect against cancers, heart diseases, and other illnesses that are caused by free radicals (cells that attack other healthy ones).
Whole grains are also high in dietary fiber, rich in complex carbohydrates, and are low in fat, making popcorn a way better snack than anyone originally thought.
“Popcorn making is one that needs constant electricity power supply in order to pop the corn. The low voltage of this power supply disrupts production and that is the major challenge encountered in the business. When there is no light, we spend much money burning fuel in our generator sets. Also, maintenance of the machine is a big problem. The machine breaks down easily and needs constant service. This alone takes much money.
Apart from the few challenges, it is a lucrative business. I meet up all my needs through it and I am fulfilled as a man paying my younger sister’s university school fees through the business.” Itodo said.
