At least eleven people were confirmed dead in an auto-crash that occurred in the evening, on Thursday, July 9, along Ile-Ife-Ondo expressway.

A source said that eight other passengers sustained various degrees of injuries. An anonymous police officer said the accident was as a result of reckless driving and over-speeding by the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash. One of the tyres of the Toyota Camry involved in the accident was said to have suddenly burst, before it collided with a commercial bus in the opposite side of the road.

Sources said the two vehicles caught fire immediately the accident occurred, thereby causing traffic jam for several hours.

Victims of the crash were said to have been rushed to the Trauma Centre in Ondo town, where some of them are under intensive care. Some other victims, according to eyewitnesses, however, got burnt beyond recognition.

The 11 corpses have been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital in Ondo state.

However, in a news report that came in on Wednesday, July 8, about 300 passengers, who were to travel in an Emirates Boeing 777-200 aircraft escaped death in Lagos on Monday, July 6.
