Bethel Orji’s first official assignment as coach of Heartland FC since taking over from Erasmus Onuh ended in defeat as Enyimba International ran out 2-0 winners in the much-hyped oriental derby at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, yesterday.
The victory helps the People Elephants go top of the Globacom Premier League table with 22 points from 12 games.
Chinonso headed Enyimba in front from Daniel Etor’s corner five minutes before the break. Christian Obiozor doubled Enyimba’s advantage through a penalty in the 55th minute. Heartland scored through Bright Ejike minutes later, but the striker’s effort was ruled out for offside.
The controversial MatchDay 12 fixtures involving Akwa United and Kwara United at the U.J.Esuene Stadium in Calabar ended 2-1 in favour of the Akwa Ibom State-owned government soccer outfit.
Olewezi Johnson nodded in the curtain raiser for the Uyo-based side in the 18th minute from Adio’s corner kick.
Substitute keeper parries Adio’s free-kick into the path of Friday Ubong who fired home from three yards his side’s second goal with three minutes to full time.
Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars of Akure can upstage Enyimba at the top of the log today if they secure the maximum points at home against Warri Wolves FC.
