Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson yesterday charged beneficiaries of the State Volunteer Scheme to complement the efforts of security operatives to check criminal activities and other forms of social vices in their locality.
Governor Dickson, who gave the charge at the presentation of stipends to beneficiaries at the secretariat of the Volunteer Scheme in Yenagoa, emphasized that their primary responsibility was to collate community-based intelligence on criminal acts such as kidnapping, cultism and other vices capable of breaching the peace in their domains.
He urged the youths to liaise with the Coordinator of the scheme, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Asufi Idowu or the secretary, who doubles as Special Adviser on Youths, Mr. Felix Bonny Ayah as, “timely and correct information is key in assisting security agencies take proactive measures.”
Describing the volunteers as ambassadors of the Restoration Government, Governor Dickson gave them kudos for their loyalty, steadfastness and peaceful disposition, which he noted, was largely responsible for the stability in the state.
The Governor also pointed out that, the scheme was established to provide some form of social security for the volunteers whose membership were drawn from the 8 local government areas of the state until they could find gainful employment and advised the youths to be wary of the antics of those who would want to destabilize the polity for their parochial interests.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Chief Collins Cocodia said 988 youths have so far received training in various fields, ranging from pipeline welding, solar energy among others, as well as 115 youths in the oil and gas industry.
Speaking, the State Coordinator of the Bayelsa Volunteer Scheme, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Asufi Idowu noted that the government has released N46 million for the payment of allowances of the beneficiaries of the scheme.
Responding, a beneficiary of the scheme, Mr. Collins Talent applauded Governor Dickson for his youth friendly posture and pledged their support to the present administration.
