Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has clarified the circumstance surrounding the detention of some workers of the Ibom International Airport.
This followed public outcry over the arrest and detention of some officials of the airport workers union after their protest over working conditions were alleged to have constituted a threat to flight operations and human lives.
Emmanuel explained at a marriage ceremony in ONNA local council yesterday that their arrest and detention was occasioned by their unruly behaviour where they blocked the runway posing danger to the landing of Aircraft at the Airport, an action which violates international regulatory guidelines of Airport operations.
The Governor recalled that some staff at the Ibom International Airport had demanded for outrageous monetary compensation following their deployment to ministries and parastatals.
He wondered why the staff chose to make such demands and disrupted flight operations thereby risking the safety of aircrafts as well as passengers.
He described it as an act of sabotage explaining that their action warranted the intervention of security agents who promptly arrested the perpetrators to answer for their criminal actions.
While assuring of government’s resolve to encourage and create an enabling environment for investors in the state Emmanuel stated that efforts are being made to resolve all industrial disputes in the area.
He congratulated the couple for their decision to come together in matrimony and charged them to uphold the sanctity of marriage.
