After several hours of speculation, Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has confirmed the death of the chairman of the state Traditional Council of Chiefs and paramount ruler of Tiv Nation, Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula.
The paramount ruler who died at the age of 71 was said to have passed on, at the National Hospital, Abuja.
Until his death, he was Pro Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and was state commissioner for Agriculture in the 80s before his enthronement as Tor Tiv on 21 April, 1991.
Ortom who spoke with newsmen on the demise of the paramount ruler yesterday, regretted the passage of the Tor Tiv whom he described as a bridge builder, stressing that he had already paid condolence visit to the family.
The late Tor Tiv was born on July 10, 1944 in Torkula village in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
As at the time of filing this report, the governor was playing host to the Tiv traditional council members who had come to formerly intimate him of the passing away of the traditional ruler.
