Following a letter from the state governor, the Edo House of Assembly yesterday approved the suspension of four elected local government chairmen for alleged diversion of funds and inability to pay staff salaries for several months.
The affected chairmen include, Mr Emmanuel Momoh, Etsako Central local council , Mr Victor Enobakhare, Egor local council, Mr Osaro Obazee, Oredo local council and Mr Roland Ibierutonmwen of Orhionmwon local government council.
According to the governor’s letter, the four Chairmen contravened the local government act by engaging in illegal employment without going through the local government service commission.
Oshiomhole stated in the letter that the suspension of the four chairmen was to pave way for investigation into the allegation and a panel of inquiry would be constituted to investigate the allegations.
Speaker, Victor Edoror said the governor had the power to suspend any local government chairman found wanting, adding that the four chairmen stand suspended for two months in the first instance.
He then directed the vice chairmen of the affected councils to take over the administration of the local government.
“In the meantime, during the period of suspension, relevant panels would be constituted to investigate the allegations against the affected chairmen.
