Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume has congratulated the governors of Borno, Alhaji Kashim Shettima and Zamfara, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, over their election as Chairman, Northern Governors Forum, and Nigerian Governors Forum respectively.
Sen. Akume in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday expressed optimism that the duo will pilot the affairs of their added responsibilities creditably and appealed to them to avoid squabbles at this precarious stage of the nation’s history.
The statement reads in part; “I have interacted with both gentlemen for some years now and I have no doubt in my mind that they will be able to handle the responsibilities entrusted on their shoulders by their colleagues. The two gentlemen are democrats who respect the wishes and aspirations of the citizenry.
“Their sterling qualities must have informed the decision of the governors to give them additional responsibilities apart from ruling their states.
“I also call on the governors to cooperate with their newly elected leaders so as to avoid the mistakes of the past, particularly in the Nigerian Governors Forum. The membership of both the Nigerian Governors Forum and the Northern Governors Forum should not over heat the polity with avoidable squabbles at this precarious stage of our history”, Akume urged.
