Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon yesterday, challenged NYSC corps members on the needs to unite for the overall progress of the country.
Gowon made the assertion yesterday in Wammako local government council hometown of the outgoing Governor Aliyu Magatakarda, while commissioning the Permanent Orientation Camp.
The elder statesman urged the corps members to always learn from one another and to believe in the oneness of Nigerian as a corporate entity. “When I was in position of authority I respected the cultural values of the people I came from, so everywhere you find yourself you should work towards excelling; if you do that you will build the unity of the country.”
He advised them to protect the facilities provided for them at the camp while thanking the Governor for his steadfastness, saying what Nigerians should appreciate what is provided for them.
In his goodwill message, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III charged NYSC members to work extra hard to unite the country.
He said although the scheme was established about 50 years back, its dream has continued to sustain the drive for unity and progress in the country and commended General Gowon for the vision in establishing NYSC.
He urged the former Head of State to always regard Sokoto as his second home while admonishing him to keep working to sustain the unity of the nation.
