MIGILI Youth Association, MYA, in Nasarawa has condemned in strong terms, the arrest of the paramount ruler of Migili chiefdom, Zhe Migili, His Royal Highness, Dr. Ayuba Agwadu and his Duduguru counterpart, Jonathan Iwala by security operatives in the state.
It will be recalled that the monarchs, along others were arrested and detained by the Police following political violence that erupted in Duduguru community as a result of the Court of Appeal verdict that upturned the election of Honourable Luka Zhekaba of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, representing Obi ll constituency in the State House of Assembly in favour of the All Progressives Congress, APC candidate, Amos Agya.
In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Emmanuel Zhebago and Audu Kirayi, National President and Secretary of the association, respectively, viewed the arrest of the two monarchs as a gross disrespect for the Migili traditional institution.
“Records have shown that the history of political violence across the state, including those that appear to be worse than the current upheaval never saw to the arrest and embarrassment of any traditional ruler of this kind.
“We find this situation as shocking, condemnable, alien and unacceptable, because as peaceful as Migili people are, our paramount rulers could be used as scapegoats. We consider this discriminating, deliberate and unjustifiable.”
While also condemning what they described as the arrest of heavily pregnant woman and underage children by the police, the statement called on the National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Legal Aid Council and other relevant authorities to join in the fight against what they described as injustices against democratic norms.
The youth expressed dismay over the unwarranted and unprovoked attack that led to the destruction of two houses, calling for immediate investigation of the dastardly act.
