Association of Families of Oil and Gas Producing Communities, ASFOGAPCOM, has commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for signing into law the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, amendment bill.
They also expressed appreciation to members of the Delta State House of Assembly for the speedy amendment and passage of the new bill.
In a statement signed by its National President, Mr. Joseph Abinogun and made available to newsmen in Warri, the group commended the courage and resoluteness of the Okowa led-administration for achieving what he described as ‘a milestone of economic inclusion and aggregation of interest in ensuring prosperity foe all Deltans.
He said the bold step taken by Okowa was a timely initiative in restructuring DESOPADEC for a far-reaching impact, saying that they were convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the new act would further position the agency for effective delivery of service to the people of its mandate area.
Abinogun who was effusive in his praise for the Governor and the legal dexterity displayed by the Delta State House of Assembly in the course of tackling all the challenges with the amendment of the laws that created DESOPADEC, hinted that the policy of inclusion is the current global trend in ensuring that everyone is carried along as the entire country is now a Host Community.
“Besides, our members cut across every segment of Delta State and beyond on account of which we posited that the benefits of such restructuring will help government eliminate waste, duplication of offices and functions, give room for accountability and transparency in the system as well as administrative efficiency.”
“In addition, such decentralisation will take the efforts of the Egbeniyi closer to the people as such ethnic group will have its own local agency manned by their own representatives, to take care of their local needs and challenges.
“This will free the agencies from suffocating claws of political jobbers who have hijacked DESOPADEC to the detriment of those for which the agency was created.”
He however, made case for land owners in the oil bearing communities, adding that those on whose land oil is directly drilled were not having impact of the benefit of what is accruing from their God given heritage.
