A group,‘Good Governance, Justice for All,’ has lauded the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, and the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, over the conduct of Election Petition Tribunals nationwide, saying that the fairness, and balance manner they have conducted matters has never been witnessed in the history of the country.
In a statement issued yesterday and signed by the group coordinator, Mr. Idris Itopa, he said his group has closely and secretly monitored the conducts of the tribunals in at least 23 states of the federation and was satisfied that the Panels were indeed free from impropriety and consisted of persons of great integrity and knowledge of the law.
Further, the group applauded the choice of the panels’ chairmen appointed by the President of the Court of Appeal, who was subsequently sworn in by the CJN.
The group held that though some panel chairmen were removed and replaced due to errors in their appointment or even death, stressing that it was not just an insignificant number but a clear testimony of the determination of the Judiciary leadership in the country to do justice.
Idris, however, urges the public to discountenance insinuations reported in some dailies that the CJN was angry with the PAC over the removal of the Rivers state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal chairman.
He said the two personalities at the helm of affairs of the judiciary are not just the best thing happening to this third arm of government, but that they work in good harmony and showing good example of judicial officers.
‘’For every panel member or chairman that was removed by the PAC, a replacement with another Judge was made who must by law be sworn in by the CJN. In order words, the PAC always discusses removal and replacement with the CJN before acting. To say therefore that the CJN was angry with the PAC over the removal of the chairman of the Rivers state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is irreconcilable’’.
The group however asked the media to be mindful of its responsibility in the society as well as avoiding making false publication capable of maligning the good image of an innocent officer.
