A nongovernmental organisation, Helpline Foundation for the Needy, has begun sensitisation of women on the need to participate in the spiritual exercises billed to commence in few days time.
To this end, the organisation during the sensitization exercise in Lafia over the weekend fetes no fewer than 200 vulnerable women in the city as part of encouragement to participate in the spiritual exercise.
President of the Foundation, Mrs. Jumai Ahmadu told journalists shortly after the programme that the Ramadan Reach-out Programme is aimed at bringing succour to Muslim women who are embarking on fasting during the holy month, adding that it will serve as a prelude to the proposed empowerment programme for the downtrodden women in the area.
She reminded the gathering of the perfected plan of the Foundation to carry out empowerment programme shortly after the Ramadan fasting, pointing out that a consultant is working out the modalities to ascertain the areas of need among the vulnerable women.
“Today’s event is just to support Muslim women that will soon commence the Ramadan fasting. We saw the need to encourage them as they embark on the spiritual exercise. However, shortly after the fasting period, we will organize an empowerment programme for them.
“We have already engaged the services of a consultant to verify the number of women that genuinely need this empowerment scheme and areas of needs. As soon as the consultant is done with his assignment, we will come back to Lafia for the flag off of the scheme,” Mrs. Ahmadu stressed.
She however, called on the women to use the Ramadan period to draw closer to Allah and pray for the peaceful co-existence of the country, stressing that the help from above is more enduring than human assistance.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Aishat Abdullahi told our correspondent in an interview that the event will go a long way to encourage vulnerable women to commence fasting with those privileged in the society.
“Some of us can now prepare our minds towards the Ramadan because we are sure of what to break our fast with. The items given to us today will go a long way in assisting us in this fasting period,” she noted.
Meanwhile, Items distributed included assorted beverages, yams, rice, millet, among others.
