Youth Urges FCT Minister, to probe JIBA over IGR

A group operating under the auspices of Peoples Mandate Bauchi, PMB, has described as sad and appalling report credited to Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State that he has invited the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to probe the spending of N1.6 billion by his predecessor, Mallam Isa Yuguda.
The PMB in a statement issued yesterday and signed by its Coordinator, Hon. Mohammed Shira, the group said that it was shocked to discover that the report of the invitation to the EFCC was indeed true and that by the action, Governor Abubakar has regrettably failed a major leadership and governance test.
According to the group, the governor’s move has shown that the democratic mandate of the people of the state has turned out to be a disinvestment and that until he retraces his steps, it will increase growing fears that the people of the state have entered ‘one-chance’ democratic ride that is going to nowhere.
Mohammed Shira said that when news of the invitation to the EFCC broke online last week, they tried not to believe it but since the state government has not denied it after almost a week after the report came out meaning that it is true, his group immediately commissioned a detailed inquiry into matter including seeking expert opinions from credible and knowledgeable quarters within and outside the state.
He disclosed that they came to the shocking realisation that the state government’s complaints against the past administration in the state on the matter of the spending of duly-appropriated security money by a duly-constituted and elected government is nothing but hollow, shallow and misdirected.
Shira accused the present government in the state of “embarking on a needless politically-motivated mischief mission against the former governor who they said had honorably accepted God’s will after the All Progressives Congress, APC, won elections in the last general elections in the state.”
He further disclosed that his group believes that the APC-led government in the state seeks to capitalise on the mood of the moment in the country by drawing the attention of the anti-graft agency to discredit the former administration’s multi-sector achievements notwithstanding the glaring indications that after almost eight months into the new dispensation, the people of the state are already complaining that they are yet to see the indices of change in their lives.
Shira wondered why the state government has embarked on what it called a wild goose chase when there are relevant records of legislative appropriation and executive spending by the Isa Yuguda-led administration, which were legally executed and documented in line with established financial regulations.
The group cited the relative peace in the state as the zero sum gain of the appropriation by members of the former Bauchi State House of Assembly and the legitimate spending by the former administration. According to the group, Bauchi has in the last eight years of the last administration remained largely peaceful due to huge investments in the state’s security infrastructure bearing in mind that the state was the headquarters of the Boko Haram.
“For once, let us be sincere to ourselves in this state as a God-fearing people. God blessed with capable and resourceful leaders. Mal. Isa Yuguda became governor when the insurgency began to spread in the Northeast with Bauchi as the headquarters of the Boko Haram.
“Throughout his tenure, he worked assiduously to rid the state of the scourge while the people of the state enjoyed unprecedented peace compared to the situation in the neighboring Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states. He deserves our commendation and not condemnation if we truly fear God,” he said.
