Coalition of Civil Society and Media Executives for Policy Stability, COCMEP, has tasked the Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, Zamfara State Governor Abdulazeez Yari to ensure that members look inwards in their various states and diversify internally generated revenue to complement the statutory allocation from the Federal Government.
In a press statement signed by its Convener/National President, Innocent Ebirim Okadigbo and National Secretary, Princess Evelyn Eyo Honesty Ogbugu, and made available to Nigerian Pilot, the group noted that ‘‘over dependence on the federal government by the states is a killer syndrome. Present financial paucity in the country should not be an excuse for non-performance but a stimulant for creative and innovative ways of overcoming the harsh economy.’’
Besides, ‘‘the Abdulazeez Yari led NGF should promote the peer review mechanism of preventing its members from impunity in office such as financial recklessness and looting of treasury, muzzling of the local government system, victimization of opponents, high handedness and other forms of abuse of office, amongst others.”
The statement recalled that the once fragmented and balkanized Nigerian Governors Forum has been united with the Zamfara State Governor as Chairman. While congratulating Governor Yari, it added that the forum should promote internal unity and avoid internal division.
