Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, comprising social media activists, students’ union and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, among others have called on the federal government to probe the gruesome, senseless and needless killing of two students of the University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT.
Issuing the order yesterday in Port Harcourt at a press briefing, Convener of the event, Livingstone Nyeche, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to live up to his electioneering campaign promise of justice to the poor by setting up an independent panel of inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting of a final year student of Management Sciences, Peter Ofurum.
The groups also demanded that all those involved in the crisis including the policeman who allegedly shot the late Mr Oforma be detected, while the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, and the Commissioner of Police. Mr Musa Kimo, be suspended from office with immediate effect.
He flayed the alleged comments of the vice chancellor that the protest was politically motivated to remove him from office and that there was no intra or inter cult involvement in the killing of the student.
In his remark, the Rivers State NLC Chairman, Comrade Williams Addah, called on the government to take urgent steps to unravel the killers of the student, address the persistent fuel scarcity and its attendant hardship.
It would be recalled that a final year student of Management Sciences, Peter Ofurum, was allegedly shot by the police on the orders of the vice chancellor during a peaceful demonstration at the institution on Monday.
