NEWLY appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof Sebastian Maimako has escaped death as some unknown gunmen invaded his private residence In Eto Baba area of Jos North local government area of Plateau, killing a security guard on duty, while a police officer attached to the house was seriously injured. Nigerian Pilot gathered that the gunmen attacked the residence at about 8 30 pm, but were not able to gain entrance into the house, but it was learnt the VC, who took over from Prof Hayward Mafuyi on June 22, was not in the country as the time of the attack. The Management of the University has condemned the attack, even as it made a strong appeal to the Security Operatives to spare no effort in unveiling the identity of the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to justice. According to a statement signed by Principal Assistant Registrar, Information and Publication, Abdullahi Abdullahi and made available to our correspondent yesterday, said the incident occurred on the night of Wednesday July 27, around 8.30pm, when some unknown assailants with unknown motives arrived the personal residence of the VC, and in the process, opened fire and killed one internal security personnel of the University called Owes Jibrin, while another security guard on duty at the residence,
Mr. Adamu Salihu, a Police Corporal attached to the Nasarawa Gwom Police Station, was critically injured as a result of the pandemonium. The statement added that other security guards on duty escaped unhurt and were able to raise alarm before the assailants fled the scene of
the incident, stressing that Security Agents promptly responded to the distress calls. The Plateau State Police Public Relations, ASP Terna Tyopev confirmed the incidence, saying the Police are investigating the matter. “So far no arrest has been made but we are on top
of the situation. Meanwhile a group known as the Movement for the Advancement and Protection of Unijos, MAAPU, has called on security operatives to speedily investigate and fish out the culprits behind the attack on the VC’s residence.
