One police officer was reportedly feared killed yesterday when about 10 unknown gunmen invaded a police Division in Noyo Community, Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The victim is said to be one of the officers manning the entrance gate of the police division.
An eyewitness told Nigerian Pilot the hoodlums armed with Ak-47 stormed the Division in the morning hour.
Reports said some policemen who were on duty ran away from the station on sighting the hoodlums.
A police of officer who begged not to be named for obvious reason told Nigerian Pilot that the Division was facing a lot of difficulties ranging from lack of enough officers and logistics amidst boundary dispute between Ochenyim in Ikwo LGA in Ebonyi and Adadama in Abi LGA of Cross Rivers, which has claimed many lives.
Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Peace Abdallah said police foiled the attempt by the hoodlums to set the police station ablaze as all their efforts to burn down the station was aborted.
“The gang, who operated with AK47 rifles poured petrol and threw fire into the DPO’s office before they were repelled by the superior fire power of officers on duty.
“All the officers and men at the station are safe except a guard who sustained injury during the attack,” she disclosed.
She said Police had begun trailing the suspected hoodlums and enjoined members of the public to always provide useful information to the Police to enable them carry out their operations effectively.
