Unknown gunmen have abducted two medical doctors in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
A statement from the state Ministry of Health made available to newsmen confirmed that they were abducted within 48 hours.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that one of the victims, Dr. Isaac Opurum, who is the director in charge of Community Health in the state, was kidnapped around 3am yesterday while Dr Ibifubara Aprioku, a female staff of the state-owned Braithwaite Specialist Memorial Hospital, BMSH, was kidnapped on Sunday while on her way from church service.
It was also gathered that the gunmen who seized her while attempting to run away laid siege around the church while her children were said to have been abandoned in the vehicle.
The PRO of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association in Rivers, Dr Amadi Dan-Jumbo in condemning the abduction of Aprioku demanded the immediate and unconditional release of their colleague.
“We wish to condemn the recent kidnap of one of our colleagues, Dr. IB Aprioku. It is one kidnap too many. This is very sad because we are civil servants, even though we answer doctors and when you add the name, doctor, it gives you a high profile but we are basically civil servants; and I don’t see any financial gain you can have by kidnapping a doctor.
“It is just traumatic on our families, traumatic to our colleagues and even our patients. That is the way we all feel. We feel very bad, very depressed and very said,” he said.
On its part, the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in the state has given the abductors of the two medical doctors 48 hours to release them unconditionally or it would down tools.
State chairman of NMA, Dr. Ibifuro Green while reacting to the recent abduction decried the spate of kidnap of medical doctors in the state.
Dr. Green, who recalled that 21 medical doctors were kidnapped in 2015, called for adequate security as medical personnel had become afraid to leave their houses for work.
