Not less than eight persons were yesterday killed in Zaki-biam, Ukum local government area of Benue State by unidentified gunmen.
Nigerian Pilot Saturday gathered that the people were killed by gunmen who stormed the yam market on a motorcycle and opened fire on innocent persons and in the process the eight persons were killed while several others were injured.
A source said the development has triggered panic and fear amongst the residents most of whom have fled the area, adding that most shops, patent medicine stores and food vendors have been closed down.
“There is tension in the area, people are scampering for safety, family have fled for fear of been killed, social and economic activities have declined drastically”,the source said.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Austin Ezeani, who confirmed the incident said two persons were killed while three others are receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Ezeani expressed worry over the killings which he said have spread from Katsina-Ala to Ukum local government area, adding that the police will also focus attention on the area even as he warned those with arms to heed the State government amnesty programme and surrender arms in their possession or face the wrath of the law.
