Gunmen have shot dead a policeman and two others along Olu-Obasanjo Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The incident occurred yesterday, at noon.
The policeman, whose identity could not be ascertained as at press time, was said to be a private escort.
Nigerian Pilot also gathered that the police personnel was the assailants main target, as they first shot him dead, before killing the driver and their principal.
An eye witnesses, who spoke with this reporter, said the victims left a new generation bank along Olu-Obasanjo road, unsuspecting that they were being trailed.
The eye witness also said the victims rode in a Toyota Thundra car, adding that the officer was a mobile policeman.
According to the eyewitness, the four armed robbers drove a Toyota Camry, but because of the busy traffic, they parked few metres away from the Rivers Transport Company, RTC, and trekked towards their targets.
It was further gathered that policemen around the vicinity abandoned their duty posts and fled at the sound of gunshots.
“They parked at the back because of traffic; they then trekked to where the Thundra car they attacked was. They killed the official, the policeman and the driver instantly. They then drove away because the traffic cleared”, said the eye witness.
It was further gathered that immediately after the incident, the police operatives came back and took their dead colleague and the dead car owner, leaving behind the driver. However, they returned later and picked the driver who was lying dead on the road.
When contacted, the Police PRO in the state, DSP Ahmad Muhammad said the command was “aware of the incident but only Sgt William Relomer, who happened to be an escort in the vehicle, lost his life.”
