…All files burnt

Hoodlums said to be numbering about 15 and suspected to be political thugs have set ablaze two Magistrates’ Courts in Olru, LGA of Imo State, destroying all available records in the affected courts.

The torched courts, Nigerian Pilot gathered, were the Chief Magistrate Court 1 and Senior Magistrate Court 2 all situated within the premises of Orlu High court.

A staff of the Orlu High Court who preferred anonymity, told newsmen that the armed attackers overpowered the security guards on duty at the High Court, forced their way into the two courts, brought out the court files and Record Books belonging to the courts and burnt them to ashes.

The source disclosed that the hoodlums fled after setting fire on sections of the court and the inferno raged fiercely until the whole files, records books and other property of the courts were totally razed.

According to him, the security guards attached to the court premises who could not help to put out the inferno only watched the hoodlums flee the scene.

He also hinted that nobody was in court when the hoodlums struck but said that there was no recent incident in the area or the court that would have prompted the attack.

He said, “This court treats cases like every other court in the Orlu high court. There is no development in the past suggesting the attack. Police investigation will reveal the reason for the arson.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Office, SP Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident and said that it was a case of suspected arson.

The police spokesman hinted that the Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galadanchi, had mandated the Area Commander in charge of Orlu Zone to commence full investigations into the matter.

He said that only the section housing the court’s documents were affected by the fire assuring that the police would stop at nothing in unraveling and track down the perpetrators.

It was further gathered that the archives of the High Court 1 in one of those Courts (since the days of Hon Justice Azuama there.

It would be recalled that sometime last year, men of underworld stormed the High Court premises in Owerri, the state capital, in the broad daylight and in commando style whisked away a notorious Kidnapper who was brought to Court that day for continuation of his trials.
