HALT THE SENSELESS KILLINGS IN KADUNA

It is most heart-rending that for months and years now, dastardly killings have been going on ceaselessly in Kaduna State without any form of decisive counter by Nigeria’s security agencies. Something must be impishly or devilishly wrong with the Kaduna situation. In God’s name, is it really convincing that the governments, both the state and Federal Governments, have done anything, late alone enough, to quell the bloodletting in the state?

In all moral or conscience-minded world, the sanctity of human life is validly non-negotiable and so must be respected and protected by responsible governments and relevant institutions. Understandably, among all the human rights laws, the chiefest responsibility of government anywhere in the world is to protect lives and properties.

However, it is regrettable that life is gradually becoming too cheap and useless in Nigeria. Daily, news of heartless and barbaric killings jostles for scarce space in the nation’s tabloids and dominates the nation’s airwaves.

From Zamfara, Benue, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba to Yobe States, Nigerians are being confronted with horrific pictures of mass slaughter perpetrated by debased merchant of death ravaging many parts of the country, especially North-central. It is painful that these blood-sucking vampires carryout their heinous crimes against humanity unchallenged by the security operatives.

The most recent and disturbing episodes of killings are the Kajuru massacre which has continued unabated. This atrocity has also thrown up serious humanitarian crises in the area as survivors of attacks are now taking refuge in different IDP camps in the state.

Protesting against the avoidable killings in Kaduna state, a Coalition Against Kajuru Killings said over 10,000 persons had been rendered homeless by the violence. The coordinator of the coalition, Rev. Father Williams Abba, made this known last weekend. According to him, “It is our belief that powerful retrogressive forces are funding these well-coordinated militia who come in and strike at our sleepy and peaceful communities and retreat without consequences”, he alleged.

He appealed to government to deploy more security forces in the hinterlands, and intensify aerial surveillance to track the terrorists and consequently end the carnage. The Kajuru killing, the group alleged, was fuelled by reckless comments attributed to the state governor who raised alarms that over 100 Fulani ethnic stock in the Kajuru community were killed.

Let the senseless killings in Kaduna state should be stopped immediately. The Federal and State governments should realistically demonstrate responsibility to protecting the lives of the people, no matter their ethnic or religious backgrounds. We also propose that a judicial panel of inquiry should be constituted to comprehensively investigate the immediate and remote causes of the recurrent killings in Kaduna State with a view to ending the massacre.

We also agree with those calling on government to deploy more security forces to the area in order to checkmate the conflicts and restore peace, law and order in the area.
