Nigerian Customs Service Operation ‘Hawk Descend’ unit ended the second week of its formation by impounding goods not fewer than 6,206 cartons of frozen poultry with a street value of N21.8 million.
‘Hawk Descend’ which was flagged-off in the south-western flank of Nigeria has the mandate to enforce the ban on imported frozen poultry products, as a means of effectively protecting the local industry.
Nigerian Pilot gathered that the seizures came from villages around the borders in Idiroko, Badagry Creeks, Badagry Waterways and Agbara in Lagos and Ogun States.
The seizures consisted of 1,636 cartons recorded by the Federal Operations Unit; 318 cartons impounded by Seme Command; 3,150 cartons seized by the Ogun Command and another 1,102 cartons recorded by the Western Marine Command.
Meanwhile, the Controller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Inde Abdullahi, while reacting to media reports indicating a surge in the price of frozen poultry products in local markets, commended his patrol teams for making life difficult for smugglers and their customers.
He, however, pleaded for understanding, stressing that the high cost of the products was not the intended objective of the operation, but to enforce total compliance to government’s laudable objective of growing the local industry.
“Our objective is to make the product unattractive to Nigerian consumers, turn it to a high risk product for smugglers and eventually cut off its supplies to our markets,” he said.
The comptroller-general also advised cold room operators who stock smuggled frozen chicken to embrace other legitimate businesses before Customs operatives swoop on them.
In a related development, ‘Operation Hawk Descend’ may have received a boost from the Customs administration of Benin Republic, following a bilateral meeting between the comptroller-general and Charles Sezan, the Director-General of Benin Customs Administration, to review joint border operations between the two countries held in Abuja.
The director-general shared Nigeria’s position that smuggled frozen poultry products represents a drain on the economy of both countries.
