President General of Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, SSAEAC, one of the two major labour unions in the nation’s power sector, Comrade Bede Opara has said the hike in electricity tariffs by the Federal Government is untimely and insensitive.
Comrade Opara who stated this yesterday in Kaduna while declaring open a two day workshop organized by SSAEAC for female members from northern states said the increase in the electricity tariff is akin to adding salt to an injury.
He said the Nigerian labour movements under the auspices of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigerian Labour Congress shall mobilize Nigerians to reject the new tariff.
He called on the distribution companies to live up to their obligations before contemplating any tariff hike.
On the 30 percent affirmation for women, Comrade Opara called on the women folk to join the mainstream of Nigerian labour movement.
He charged the participants to be “more active in labour unionism and all forms of social justice crusade”. He described women folk as a very “veritable tools for social change who always attract attention whenever they speak”.
Comrade Opara however disclosed that he shall continue to ensure the empowerment of the female members of SSAEAC in line with the global 30% affirmative initiative.
