Financial decay is currently rocking the Department of Sociology of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano state as the Head of Department, HOD, Dr. Umar Shehu has been accused of embezzlement.
In a letter entitled: ‘Reporting the Head of Department of Sociology, Dr. Umar Shehu Usman, on Embezzlement of funds in the Department’, written to the Co-coordinator of the Academy and signed by Dr. Goddy Osa Igbaekeme, is accusing the HOD of financial misappropriation, using his personal account to collect huge sums of money on behalf of the department for articles for publication in the Academy’s journal.
The letter was copied to the Deputy Inspector General, DIG in charge of Training, The Commandant, and Dean, SM & S, as well as the accused, Dr. Umar Shehu.
According to the letter, matters were made worse as Dr. Shehu insisted that he is not answerable to anybody in the department.
The HOD was also accused of converting the departmental imprest, and the examination allowance due to the department, to his personal use, as the department currently lacks office stationeries.
The letter also accused Dr. Usman of not releasing money to the department examination’s officer in the last three semesters. The HOD’s leadership style, the letter said, has made the members of staff in his department (academic and non- academic) to lose confidence in him.
But speaking in a telephone interview with Nigerian Pilot, Dr. Usman said he is not aware of the petition.
The HOD, who admitted knowing the petitioner, said he (Usman) is the editor of the journal, even as he admitted that there was journal committee, but was dissolved due to the fact that the journal has an editorial board.
He said, “The board has not sat but the department is meeting tomorrow (today) and I expect that if there is any issue like that, it should be brought to the meeting, but as I speak with you now, I have not received any petition like that”.
The letter dated May 11 and a copy obtained by Nigerian Pilot reads in part: “In the light of the above, the entire Academic Staff; nine academic staff and three non-academic staff in the department has lost confidence in him as he failed to provide the desired academic leadership. The exodus of lecturers from the department becomes imminent as a result of the HOD’s leadership style.
“In a related development, Dr. Umar Shehu Usman was a former Chief of Staff to Governor of Nasarawa state, Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura and was sacked by the Governor on the same ground of corruption and financial impropriety.
