Unknown assailants have killed a commercial bus driver, Mr. Augustine Obaji, 36 years, along Okwor-Idiokpo market road in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The deceased was said to have been murdered with axes by his assailants at mid-night on Saturday.
A family source told Nigerian Pilot that the deceased loaded passengers from Odumoke market to Okwor Ngbo market on the fateful day, only for the family to hear about his mysterious death the following day.
The source further revealed that shortly before he conveyed the passengers who were mainly traders from Odumoke market to Okwo market, the deceased had discussed with the wife on phone who contacted him to know how he was doing and when he would return, but the phone was switched off.
His failure to return home as usual at the appropriate time made the family members to suspect danger.
The following day, the relatives, including the younger brother, Emeka Obaji, started looking for him only to find his lifeless body in his vehicle along Idiokpo Road, where he was murdered by suspected hoodlums.
However, sources at the park where the deceased loaded told Nigerian Pilot that prior to his departure, the victim had struggled with another driver on whose turn it was to load, which led to exchange of words between the duo.
The sources further disclosed that gunmen had been terrorising the Okwor Ngbo market, especially on the market days, dispossessing people of their money and belongings.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Chris Anyanwu said the deceased was murdered with axes by hoodlums on his way back home, but stated that investigations were on to bring the perpetrators to justice.
