A 14-man delegation from the House of Representatives Committee on Army has visited the headquarters of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to inspect infrastructural facilities at the Maxwell Khobe Military Cantonment, Jos, Plateau State.
The committee was met on arrival by the acting General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Mohammed Sani Aliyu.
A statement from Colonel Kayode Ogunsanya, the deputy director, Army Public Relations, of the division and made available to newsmen yesterday reads that “in his opening remarks, the team leader, Honourable Remamde Shawulu Kwewuh stated that the purpose of their visit which was part of their oversight legislative function of inspecting facilities in the barracks before appropriating funds to renovate these facilities.”
He noted that the Nigerian Army played a critical role in the stability of this country.
As part of their legislative agenda, the committee wanted the military, especially the Nigerian Army, to be a world class institution with officers and men with high motivation and with a conducive living environment.
He stressed that they wanted the Nigerian Army to be capable of performing its roles of protecting the territorial integrity of the nation and to be able to protect the rights of Nigerians, especially the right to life.
He concluded that members were particular with the security sector reforms with a view of ensuring that it met international best practices.
The statement also read that in his welcome address, Brig-General Aliyu appreciated the importance of the visit by receiving members of the committee in person despite his tight schedule.
The acting GOC briefed the committee members on the dilapidated state of medical, accommodation, road network, water system and schools’ facilities as well as epileptic supply of electricity in the barracks.
The GOC later conducted the visiting team on round the barracks.
The GOC was accompanied during the visit by the Commander, 3 Division Garrison, Brigadier General Benson Akinroluyo, Commander, 43 Division Engineers, Brigadier-General Okechukwu Ugo, Commander, 53 Division Signals, Brigadier-General Nwabueze Njoku and other principal staff officers.
