Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has lauded the Nigerian Army and Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, over their partnership to monitor and report cases of human rights abuses and violations by security agencies.
A statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Senior Programme Manager and Director, Media, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, Barr. Ogom Kifordu and Zainab Yusuf respectively, stated that the synergy between the army and NBA is a welcome development as it is capable of engendering hope in the change agenda of the present administration.
“This synergy between the army and NBA is a welcome development and it is capable of engendering hope in the change of the current federal government.”
The group acknowledged the commitment of the chief of army staff to embed human rights into the army, massive re-training and re-orientation while challenging its hierarchy to punish all culprits implicated in human rights violation and to uphold respect for the rule of law.
“So we pass a vote of confidence on the chief of army staff in this specific programme and we are committed to partnering with the military to promote human rights.”
HURIWA was optimistic that this partnership will ensure that Nigerians collectively strive to create a nation that upholds the fundamental rights and promotion of all citizens.
It would be recalled that the NBA and the army last year inaugurated a team to monitor and report cases of human rights abuses and violations by security agencies.
