The emergence of Willie Obiano as Anambra State governor, last year, has neither cleansed the Augean stable of bad elements nor made them go into hiding, but left tracks on how they can be fished out.
The state, which used to be the fertile ground for both indigenous night marauders and cross border criminals, has become once again a safe place to live.
Nevertheless, the intensive crime fighting in the state by the government and security operatives does not preclude pockets of crime still existing in the state.
The use of different strategic methods to dislodge these hoodlums have equally opened new dimension of life for them. They have devised other means of keeping themselves moving like advanced fee fraud, 419, menace that is as old as man.
However, even in their new system, the criminals are not being spared as the security personnel are always on their trail.
But for Casmir O Anene, 38, who hails from Lejje community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, it was a bad dice for him because he was led into the business by frustration.
Anene and members of his gang operate in his state, while he was arrested; members of his group are still at large, with security operatives’ still hunting for them.
They defrauded an Onitsha- based sales girl, the sum of N1 million she was to deposit in a bank for her principal.
The act led the girl investigated by the police and dragged to court.
Anene was a businessman who sold kitchen utensils before the business crashed at Abuja.
He claimed that his friend called Tobias introduced him into the deal in 2013 in Enugu.
How he duped the girl, Anene told Nigerian Pilot Sunday that he deceived the girl by telling her that he would marry her to keep the fraud going.
He said, “When I saw the girl, my mind had told me that she would have some cash to spend knowing where she works.
“I asked about her name and she told me (Blessing), we exchanged numbers and started chatting about marriage and how to raise a family which she was following.
“After our agreement, I took her to Tobias who introduced me into the business as planned, to pray for the success of our marriage where he posed as a prayer warrior.
“From there on, we started asking her for money to solve one problem or the other before she came up with the N1 million.
“When I had collected the money, I left her and made myself incommunicado until after one year, she saw me mistakenly, and immediately alerted the vigilante group who arrested me and brought me here,” Anene confessed.
The suspect was arrested at Abagana in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state by the Department of state service, DSS.
Anene also told the Nigerian Pilot Sunday that he would never delve into such an act again, if the security operatives would temper justice with mercy.
But the state Director of DSS, Mr. Alex Okeiyi, told this paper in Awka that such cases were rampant now in the state following the dismantling of kidnapping and armed robbery.
He warned the elements in the business to desist from their nefarious activities and look for credible means of livelihood.
Okeiyi further said that the security operatives in the state in collaboration with others would not rest in their oars until criminal activities were completely flushed out of the state.
He commended Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and the hierarchy of DSS for their adequate support to the state command.
