Two first half goals from Anthony Iyake was all Ibiono Ibom needed to lift the first edition of Senator Bassey Albert’s U-20 Unity cup, at the expanse of a formidable Uruan side.
Uruan managed to reduce the deficit, minutes to wrap up the first half, but could not progress further to break Ibiono’s rock solid backline, who resisted their numerous advances.
In the third place match played earlier, Wisdom Ferdinand scored twice to help Itu overcome Nsit Ubium 2-1. Golden Eaglets’ star, Emmanuel Essien got the consolation for Nsit Ubium in the 76th minute through a 30 yards free kick.
Wisdom Ferdinand from Itu emerged Most Valuable player of the tournament, while Nso Archibong got the golden boot after netting six goals.Ndukeabaisi Peter and Emmanuel Ukoebe, both of Uruan Local Government were awarded best goalkeeper and best defender respectively, while Etinan was voted best behaved team.
The matches played at the Uyo Township Stadium had in attendance top names in the sporting cycle of the country, including the Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba, Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who was represented by the Commissioner for Sports, Sir Monday Uko, Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke, House of Assembly members and other dignitaries.
Presenting the trophy to the winning team, the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Sir. Ebong Uko, said the State Government is committed to the development and discovery of talents that will become worthy ambassadors of the state and nation in the future. He praised the Senator for choosing to empower Youths of the Senatorial District through Sports.
In his remarks, the sponsor of the competition, Obong Bassey Albert promised to upgrade the standard of the competition in 2016. He urged the state FA and other football scouts that witnessed the games, to map put and effectively harness talents discovered in the tournament, integrate them same into the different football teams in the state and country at large.
Senator Albert who is the Chairman Senate committee on Gas, represents Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo Senatorial District) in the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
