…arraigns 129 cult-suspects in Benin
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon E. Arase, has restated his resolve to ensure justice for victims of crimes in Nigeria, even as he admonished recidivist to shun crime or be prepared to face the full wrath of the law.
The IGP also assured that the ongoing onslaught against criminal gangs in the country is continuing.
Consequently, 129 suspects have been arraigned at the Chief Magistrate, Special Grade “F” Court in Benin for offences ranging from Kidnapping, Cultism, Murder and Armed Robbery.
Force PRO, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu hinted the development in a terse statement yesterday and made available to Nigerian Pilot Saturday.
It would be recalled that the lGP, in his bid to renew the battle against deadly cultists in Edo state, directed that all cultists in the axis must be routed in the next few weeks.
Consequently, 65 suspects were arrested in connection with their involvement in the crime, which has recently claimed scores of lives in Edo and parts of Delta state.
The IGP also dispatched a special crack squad to the state to tackle the spate of cult activities and other related crimes which have been on the increase.
The squad headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad comprising units from the Police Mobile Force, Explosives Ordinance Department, State Anti-Robbery Section, and Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, acted on the orders of the police chief and begun manhunt of the cultists in the state and as a result, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Stephen Onwochei, announced the arrest of over 65 persons so far.
Prior to this development, the police Chief’s serious concern, is about the activities of cult groups in Benue, Rivers, Cross-River and Akwa-Ibom States and thus, directed all command Commissioners of Police, CPs and Divisional Police Officers, DPOs of the affected states to arrest and prosecute youths that engage themselves in cult activities in order to forestall the increasing menace of this evil.
The IGP also warned all the state CPs and DPOs to be on the lookout for cult members and bring them to book. Adding that, parents and guardians should warn their wards and children against this social menace that can jeopardize their future.
