araseInspector-General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase has withdrawn no less than 3,168 police security personnel attached to the 36 state governors of the federation.
Before now, each state governor had at least 150 security aides but IGP Arase pruned it down to 62, even as he expressed worries that too many police officers and men were doing jobs other than their core police duties, yet they were being promoted.
The police chief’s action is in compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that policemen attached to unauthorised VIPs be withdrawn to resume their regular police duties.
IGP Arase, who disclosed the new arrangement in Lagos at the weekend, added that usually, when these policemen are deployed from these special assignments back to their core duties, they may have lost touch.
Nigeria’s number one police officer revealed further that plans are also underway to withdraw security from unauthorised persons who use police orderlies for personal gains rather than as a result of real threats to their lives.
“Such people should find other ways to secure themselves”, Arase ordered.
Nigerian Pilot recalls that penultimate Friday, during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Police Affairs and the Police Service Commission at the Presidential Villa, President Buhari ordered the IGP to withdraw policemen from unauthorized persons across the country.
