Kelechi Iheanacho’s Manchester City FC welcome FC Dynamo Kyiv for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie looking well placed to progress to the last eight.
City are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time and take on a Dynamo side who have never won a game in England.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are in pole position to progress having won 3-1 in Kyiv on 24 February thanks to goals from Sergio Agüero, David Silva and Yaya Touré.
Previous meetings
• Dynamo prevailed 2-1 on aggregate when the clubs met in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 16. Andriy Shevchenko and Oleh Gusev struck in a 2-0 first-leg win and City’s 1-0 victory back in Manchester, through Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick, was not enough to save them on a night when Mario Balotelli was sent off after 36 minutes.
Match background
• City are seeking a third straight home in the competition having defeated Sevilla FC (2-1) and VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (4-2) in the group stage. On both occasions they won the game with goals in the final ten minutes.
• City have lost all of their three previous two-legged ties in Europe’s elite club competition – against SK Fenerbahçe (first round, 1968/69) and FC Barcelona (round of 16, 2013/14 and 2014/15). On each occasion they travelled away for the second leg and lost.
• If City have yet to reach the quarter-finals, their coach Manuel Pellegrini has been there with two different clubs – Villarreal CF (2005/06, 2008/09) and Málaga CF (2012/13).
• City have never failed to win a European tie after winning the away first leg. There have been six such contests, most recently against FC Porto in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League round of 32 (2-1 away, 4-0 home).
Dynamo Kyiv
• Group G runners-up Dynamo are looking to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 1999 – when coach Serhiy Rebrov was leading their attack.
• Although the Ukrainian title-holders lost 2-1 at Chelsea FC in the group stage, they did win their two other away fixtures – 2-0 victories at Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC and FC Porto.
