Ijaw Youth Council, IYC has urged the in-coming administration of President elect, Major General Muhammadu Buhari to sustain the Presidential Amnesty programme in the Niger Delta so as to maintain peace in the region.
President of the council, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, who gave the advice recently, at the IYC congress in Abuja, also urged the youths in the region to be calm and peaceful.
Eradiri advised that the existing federal structures set up by the past administration to develop the Niger Delta region such as the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC and Niger Delta Ministry should be strengthened and properly funded.
He said that the problem of environmental degradation in the region includes the implementation of the United Nation Environmental Programme, UNEP report on Ogoni, which must be tackled and implemented accordingly.
According to him, “The recommendations of the National Confab should be implemented by the in-coming government so as to deepen the federal system of government where the federating units would develop at their own pace.”
Eradiri said that this would address some of the imbalances responsible for political instability in the country as well as desperation to control government at the centre.
He said that congress called on the incoming government to start the process of national integration and run an all-inclusive government to address polarisation and disunity that may arise from the outcome of the Presidential elections. All these he said should be taken seriously for the sake of peace.
