President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is passionate about democracy and security of Nigeria. He also assured all Nigerians that he will not muzzle the freedom of expression.
President Buhari gave his words in Abuja yesterday while speaking at Nigerian Pilot newspaper/Nigerian Newsworld magazine annual lecture/award and gala night held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
Represented by his senior special adviser on media, Mr. Femi Adesina, Buhari reassured Nigerians that he will govern the country according to the dictates of democracy and good governance.
He explained further that he cannot govern the country that is not secured, assuring that by the end of this year, Boko Haram would have been annihilated.
He said his first trips to neighbouring countries were to foster alliance in the fight against Boko Haram. “Today, the multinational joint task force, MNJTF has been formed. The capacity of Boko Haram to hold territories is gone. Before now, they were holding sway in 18 local governments in North-East region of the country. Very soon we will wipe out Boko Haram.
“I am also very passionate about freedom of expression and I will not muzzle the media or freedom of expression of Nigerians.”
Regarding the anti-corruption war, Buhari assured that his administration will never arrest anybody who is just accused of corruption except investigation is properly done and the person found culpable.
“Anybody accused of sharp practices will not and cannot be arrested until the case is investigated and a prima facae established against the person. Such a person will be prosecuted according to law.
“My anti corruption crusade is not personal but for the good of the country and therefore I appeal to all Nigerians to join hands with me to fight the war. I promise not to be selective in my war against corruption but rather to be just and fair to everybody.”
President Buhari enjoined the media, especially Nigerian Pilot, to join hands in the fight against graft.
