Ahead of the February 20, 2016, National Assembly re-run election in Imo North Senatorial Zone, a group known as the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo Students Youth Wing has called on the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Yakubu Mamood to replace the Electoral Officers in Ihitte Uboma, Isiala Mbano and Okigwe ocal government areas.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, National President of the group, Comrade Anya S Anya alleged that INEC and her electoral officers in the three local government areas have been compromised adding that, if allowed to conduct the exercise, it would create credibility question and make nonsense of INEC’s hard earned reputation, achieved substantially during the last election, by the Prof Attahiru Jega’s led electoral commission.
Comrade Anya alleged that the electoral officer for Isiala Mbano, Mrs Florence Ihechere is a relation of a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC National Working Committee, NWC, member and the electoral officer for Ihitte Uboma, Mr. Nwachukwu Anyalewechi is a close political associate of the APC’s senatorial candidate and the former speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly.
He equally alleged that the electoral officer in charge of Okigwe, one Okechukwu Obiezue is equally a close friend of the Imo State deputy governor.
The group therefore asked INEC not to allow itself to be dragged to the mud by ensuring a transparent election.
“We are urging INEC to make sure that its staff deployed for the election are not partisan especially when they are linked to a particular party such thing brings violence. Our findings show that some of the INEC officials have started romancing with a particular political party and we are concerned.
“We are calling on INEC to retrace its step. We are calling on the INEC chairman to replace the electoral officers in the three affected local governments for the election to be successful and investigate other electoral officers because the world is watching.”
