caretaker committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State yesterday took over the state party secretariat along Okigwe Road, in the capital city, Owerri, following a court decision in favour of the committee.
Chairman of the committee, Barr. Vitalis C. Okafor while addressing newsmen in his office yesterday explained that the members of his committee had waited for the determination of the suit against his committee before taking over the office complex.
Insisting that the decision of his committee members to stay away from the secretariat was not borne out of cowardice or weakness but the conscious resolve to allow the judiciary exhaust its processes as well as give peace a chance.
He stated that his team will take off without any further delay in repositioning the party by ensuring transparency in the coming party congresses and zoning of positions in line with the party’s Constitution.
According to him, the 16-man caretaker committee will religiously abide by the congress guidelines as approved by the National Executive Committee, NEC, of PDP.
Fielding questions from newsmen, he noted that agitators may have gone to court with the notion that they would win but urged them to embrace peace and return to back to the party.
On the coming rerun elections in Okigwe senatorial district and some state constituencies, Barr. Okafor called on Imolites to support and vote for all the PDP candidates, expressing optimism that the party would win landslide given a free and fair ground.
He however, extended the olive branch to all aggrieved members of PDP in the state to come back to the fold saying the doors of the party remain open for aggrieved old and new members.
He also assured of conducting a credible party congress at all levels and advised all to respect the national leadership of the party and rally support for his interim administration to succeed.
