Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the election management bodies of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, are brainstorming to reduce the cost of conducting elections within the region.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this known during a 2-day workshop tagged ‘Study On The cost Of Elections In The ECOWAS Region, which commenced yesterday, in Abuja.

According to him, the ever rising cost of voter registration, provision of electoral logistics, deployment of sensitive and non sensitive materials for elections which gulp huge amount of money are critical issues that should be looked into, so as to fashion out a way in delivering credible polls that will not cost the countries huge amount of money.

He said another key area is the issue of litigation facing the commission, as it is imperative that it should be looked into, as it not only cost the commission huge resources, but equally slows down INEC’s work.

In his words; “This will enable us share ideas, so as to facilitate free, fair and credible elections. It is imperative for electoral commissions to look at the way elections are been funded.

“The first thing for ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions, ECONEC, is to look at why elections is costly and with the view of addressing what can be done to reduce election cost.”

On 2019 elections, Prof. Yakubu stated that the commission is doing the needful to ensure it delivers free, fair and credible elections that will be adjudged best by both Nigerians and the International Community.
