Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, National Electoral Commissioner for Ondo, Osun and Lagos states, Professor Akinola Salau, has implored the newly elected Federal lawmakers to perform in line with voters’ expectations.
Salau made this declaration at the occasion of issuance of Certificates of Return to the winners in the 2015 general elections, at Archbishop Ginning memorial hall, Oba Akinjobi Street, Ikeja, Lagos.
He stated that democracy rests essentially on the government of the people, by the people and for the people, adding that people delegate power to those they wish to directly exercise governance on their behalf.
Salau stressed, “it is crucial for us to understand that victory at the polls is synonymous with winning the confidence of the people to exercise authority over them. So once again, I want to congratulate you for winning the confidence of your people to serve them.”
He commended the people of Lagos for conducting themselves peacefully and decently during electioneering.
“Judging by the tension generated by the keenly contested positions, pessimists had predicted a very rough year for Lagos State in particular and the country in general. I want to applaud you for proving to the world once again that Lagos State is indeed the ‘Centre of Excellence”, said Salau.
Meanwhile, the Lagos REC, Mr Akin Orebiyi, has handed over the certificates of return to the 24 newly elected House of Representatives members and 3 Senators.
