As part of efforts to combat emerging security threats in Nigeria, Minister of Defence, Brigadier General Mansur Mohammed Dan’Ali (rtd) at the weekend commissioned the first in African Indoor Shooting Gallery Range for the training of cadets and other members of the armed forces.
The 300 metres Indoor Gallery Range, built by the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA at the academy permanent site, Kaduna is designed with electronic and computerised features to train NDA cadets and other members of the armed forces in weapons handling and mastering.
Also commissioned by the Minister were newly acquired 12 Hankook Training Vehicles and the newly introduced Faculty of Military Science building.
Speaking at the occasion, the Defence Minister described the gallery range as a monumental achievement by the NDA Commandant, saying mastering the skills and techniques in weaponry was essential to every military personnel, especially with the dynamic security challenges Nigeria is currently facing.
He said the training remains an important ingredient to the quality of officers produced by the institution, believing that, the range and other facilities will enhance training and produce better officers for the country.
According to him, “Mastering the skills and techniques in weaponry is essential to every military personnel, especially with the dynamic security challenges our nation is experiencing. Hence, the design and construction of the indoor gallery firing range by the Nigerian Defence Academy to meet the all round training need of the cadets.
“Similarly, the acquisition of 12 Hankook training vehicles will ease the pressure on the entire academy community to maintain and derive the maximum benefits from these facilities,” he said.
Speaking on the faculty of military science, General Dan’Ali (rtd) noted that, military world over rely on the application of science for research and development.
“The establishment of the Faculty of Military Science and Interdisciplinary Studies in the academy, though a TETFUND project will consolidate the application of science for military purposes. It is indeed a great achievement”, he said.
In his remarks, NDA Commandant, Major General Mohammed T. Ibrahim expressed appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Defence for their unwavering support for the academy to achieve greatness.
